Is there a better way to lazy load

I like the idea of lazy load for a image rich site but I’m not liking the overall effect of the images jumping when they are called on to the page. Reading different articles to overcome this effect requires the image to be called say 500px before it the user actually views it. Is there a way to achieve it using the current lazy load that is built into blocs. ie amendment of code

I have also found that lazy loading is not great lately. Chrome is now lazy loading at a browser level, so I think this setting is causing some conflict there and and perhaps elsewhere. I have turned it off for the last three months and found it much better.
