All of the gallery Blocs I’ve seen just have simple “lightbox” expansion, with the option to add a caption. In Sandvox, each gallery thumbnail would expand to a new page where you could put lots of text and more images. This is straightforward to do in Blocs by using Navigate to Page instead of Lightbox, BUT with Sandvox you’d also get Forward, Back and Up (back to Gallery) buttons:
I haven’t seen image navigation in a design like that in about 15 years ! I am not sure how to do something like that in Blocs to be honest - but I wouldn’t want to go back to older styes personally.
I would do it in Lightbox and have left and right and close to go back to menu - this seems to be the modern way and standard way visitors will expect to be honest.
I do not think you will find any third party designs going back to this style - but I am sure in Blocs you could create it somehow!!
Volt CMS doesn’t seem to offer any advantage over what I’m doing now (linking from a Gallery Bloc to a new page), unless I’m missing something. The demo doesn’t show forward/back/home buttons.
When you open the lightbox controls there is an option to open another image or a an alternative image or video the alternative image could be in informative info with extra image
