How do you keep existing sites up to date?

I do wonder. I made a webpage for a friend once with Blocs 4 and Bootstrap 4, using Volt CMS amongst other great Brics. Meanwhile there have been quite a few updates to Bootstrap (even version 4), as well as to Volt CMS.

I do not dare to simply update the old site using Blocs 5 and all the updates some of the brics I used had in the last 2 years.

How do you engage this “issue” with client sites? And how often do you do it? Regularly, like on a yearly basis? Only when the client wants / needs it, or when changes to the site need to be made anyway?

Create a copy of the project.

Update in the copied project to the new versions.

Publish to a test / staging subdomain and test your website.

If everything is fine, copy the content to the production domain.

Unless you have an agreement with your client for maintenance or they have asked for updates. (You can send them an email that it’s worth reviewing) why would you spend time updating a client site??
