Reducing file size for pictures

What are people doing for this? I’ve been exporting from Affinity Photo at 80% JPG with varying results.

Has anyone uploaded a phot to Facebook and then re-downloaded? Just wondering what the done thing is these days?

squoosh is quite good if you want to squeeze out the last bit or compare different formats

I have that actually - maybe need to give it a try.

You should try webp format, it has a more effective compression and quality rate. It also supports transparency. In my case I export from photoshop in the size and quality I need.

That’s right, webp is the format of choice.
In my current PS version, however, webp is only found under “save as”. Do you use this method ? when exporting (with visual control) I only find the usual suspects (gif, png, jpg)

I use a freeware app called Cesium Image Compressor. It can do compression, resizing and conversion to JPG, PNG & WebP. I use it a lot for bulk images and it does an excellent job.

I usually do as much optimizing as possible in Affinity Photo, but then I run the exported files through ImageOptim, a free application that also removes things like exif data.

I still do that👇, even 5 years later

But use WEBP most of the time.

I export from Affinity as jpg @100%, then run through ImageOptim, which generally reduces down to about 25% of the original file size.

Yes, you can only save a webp from photoshop with the command save as. But if you merge all layers you can choose directly webp, otherwise you have to save a copy and then choose webp. They should include this feature on the export for web panel.

I have the webP convert turned on in Blocs. Some browsers don’t support as I understand?

Is there a reason you export from Photoshop as opposed to letting Blocs do it?

you can set the quality between 0% and 100% when exporting, and with some programs you can also set the color depth (number of colors) or the dither mode. For motifs with little detail or with a lot of detail, it is sometimes worth playing with these values. This can have a massive effect on the size. As a rule, however, the webp format is generally an improvement over jpg. I sometimes do this manual optimization for large intro or background images.

My process involves designing the site first and then build it with blocs, so I have to produce the images before starting to work inside blocs. So In my case is easier to export the images in the right format and size but you could let blocs convert your images

Great if you use Windows. This is 100% free. Lots of options. It works so well. When they update the program and begin charging for it, I would have no problem buying.
