Steps for importing a website

New to Blocs and not a professional web developer, although I’m reasonably code-literate. My company site, which is basic and entirely static, was created long ago in the now-orphaned SandVox. I bought Blocs Plus hoping that it would import my whole site but it only seems to import styles, colors and images, one page at a time.

Can anyone help me with a step-by-step process for importing my entire site into Blocs? Thanks in advance.

Hi Julia,

Welcome to the forum.

You not able to import and convert existing sites in their entirety only repurpose and rebuild.

I had a look at your existing site and I don’t think it would take much to rebuild within Blocs. If needed you can download all the existing image assets and text (use sitesucker, etc., if needed) and repurpose those within Blocs. By using Blocs your site will be responsive due to the underlying use of the Bootstrap framework which Blocs uses.

You may find benefit from the 3rd party “Blocs Minimalist Library” from @eldar to get up and running even quicker regarding layout and structure to then quickly input the content from your old site. When you are done you may not have an exact replica of your existing site, but instead a more modern version which perhaps better exemplifies your content and talents.

Cool stuff you do by the way, impressive.

Hi @JuliaTruchsess

Just did a search and found your website and it would require to be built from scratch and would not take that long to be fair and would massively benefit being brought into the modern era as it’s not mobile optimised and this is poor on ratings and a poor experience for the user where mobile devices are massively used.

As @Blocs_User has said using minimalist from @Eldar or using native blocs and maybe check out Eldars videos and will show you step by step.
Also not forgetting templates - all the hard work had been done! And his support is amazing!

Hi @JuliaTruchsess Welcome to Blocs!

As others mentioned, unfortunately it is not possible to import an entire website into Blocs. That being said, if your time allows, rebuilding it from scratch using the data you can pull from your old site using the Blocs Extractor will probably be a better idea anyway.

As others mentioned, you can use some 3rd party tools to make the process faster, but even if you do it without any add-ons, I believe it will be fairly simple to rebuild this site in Blocs. If you will have any questions along the way, I am sure community here will be able to help you, and if needed I am also always happy to personally assist you with everything I can (free of charge, of course).

Cheers,
Eldar

Thanks all for your kind words and suggestions. I’ll probably spring for Minimalist and maybe templates at some point. Now just need to find the time to work on it!

Hi @JuliaTruchsess! I saw this post and wasn’t sure if I had pulled up the right forum this morning. Welcome aboard and I can say that my own journey with Blocs and in particular Minimalist from @Eldar has been great. He regularly updates Minimalist with fixes and new features at a pretty consistent cadence.

Hi @PatrickSalo

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m glad your journey with Blocs and Minimalist Library was great!

A lot of cool stuff is planned (and already in the works) for the future updates! Can’t wait to share :muscle:

Hi everyone!

Just signed up for the community. I have a similar problem and those are not the answers I was hoping for

We have a website made in Blocs by a freelance webdesigner. However we got ghosted by that person (even though we paid the bills and everything), so we only have the exported code from our webserver but not the Blocs project.

We made already some changes in the code directly but now we wanted to change the font color but are unable to find the right position(s) in the all.css file.

So that means, we have to recreate the website from scratch as well.

Kind regards, Jonah!

Hi @Jonah

Unfortunately, it does mean that you need to recreate it from scratch.

@Jonah Have you asked this person to send you the project file? Obviously that would make it easier.

This isn’t something I have ever needed to try, but in theory you could use the developer tools in Safari and select the text in question, which would then reveal the various properties, such as size and colour. From there you could click the small arrow that will reveal the source and change it with an FTP editor or simply make a note of the details.

You could then use a text editor to find examples of the old colour and replace it with the new one, before uploading the changes. Obviously, make backups.

I appreciate none of this is ideal, but it should allow you to edit the text colours without building the site from scratch. There is an app called PineGrow that might allow you to download the CSS and html, then edit it directly that way. The learning curve would be massive though.

As an afterthought you might even be able to load the CSS text into ChatGPT and get some help both identifying and changing the text colour. That would be my first option worth trying. Then you just upload the updated file.

There is actually an extractor tool inside Blocs, which I had never used before, but in theory you could use that to download the text styles, images and colours. In this instance I don’t think it would help you though, unless you planned to rebuild the site from scratch. Not the end of the world with just a couple pages, but a larger site would obviously entail much more effort.

Hi @Jonah

Sorry to hear about your experience, that really sucks.

I’m happy to help here. I can update the code for you to change the colour with another app rather quickly at no cost.

Obviously not as good as having the project file, but doable for minor changes like this.

I’ll send you a DM, if you are keen.

Pete
