I know that “support across all major browsers” isn’t there yet. But Jpeg XL is coming, since it’s superior in so many ways, and browser support is being worked on.
You can basically take any other image format “strength” and .jxl is better: Jpeg XL info
Support is already there in Safari for Mac and iOS.
There are many ways to compress images into reasonable sizes, but my request isn’t about size. Jpeg XL supports real HDR and after Lightroom implemented both HDR and .jxl export a while back, we now have the option to serve HDR images to Apple users who own HDR-capable devices (any XDR screen)
Many of you reading this might not have an HDR screen, or you might think of ‘HDR photography’ as something you’d want to un-see. But I’m not talking about faux-HDR photos that were popular 5 years ago and basically are the OPPOSITE of true HDR, but rather the HDR you get from your OLED TV in movies and so on.
Whether movies have benefitted from HDR can be discussed, but for still images, I find it very impactful.
I just noticed that I can’t even import .jxl (or .heic) into Blocs’ asset manager—I didn’t expect that.
That certainly is interesting, I like to think I’m abreast with image file formats etc, but JPG XL has passed me by, thanks for the info link. JPG has needed something doing with it for some time, some kind of update/upgrade, it is like a grandparent of image files these days, JPG 2000 was 25 years ago and never really took off,. Webp is great for web stuff, but JPG XL looks just what is needed when archiving source image files, TIFFs, PSD, AFphoto just clog hardive and cloud space.
Edit: Just read the article and it looks great also for web content has some advantages over Webp it seems. It looks as though JPG XL is like an egg sandwich it’s an all rounder for any occasion.
Hey
In my mind, it’s not a question of “if” it becomes the standard, but when.
It would be nice to at least have support on the tool-side to be able to add these images to a project and then I’ll deal with serving images, including fallbacks, on my end.
As it stands now, Blocs won’t recognize the format for asset import. I can however import images to Apple Photos, including HDR data at high bit depth at very small sizes. It’s a great image format!
Yes, as I said: it’s not an ‘ask’ because it’s in use everywhere and it’s “missing” in Blocs.
Serving actual HDR images on the web is pretty new. If someone wants to break this experience to users now, and dazzle them with a bit of WOW, someday soon is the right time. Not when 98% of the web is using it, 3 years after most browsers support it.
I know THIS is NOT what you’re saying, but I hope: “a day late and a dollar short” isn’t the guiding mentality in terms of ‘features we want to support’.
