Webp export and automatic fall -back jpg

I am doing some testing with the webp export feature in Blocs. After exporting, I see how nicely Blocs has created webp versions.

However, when testing in a version of Safari and a version of IE that doesn’t support webp, the fall-back jpgs were not displayed. There is just an empty box with the alt text - no image.

I thought that checking the webp export would “automate” this, and recognize when a client browser odes not support webp.

Or did I understand this incorrectly?

Thanks!

That is correct. If a browser doesn’t support WebP it actually just ignores the markup for it.

what’s IE … a distant nightmare. :joy:

What version of Safari and what version of macOS?

Do you have a link of the site that you can share here?

It should display the jpeg versions but Blocs won’t generate jpegs for assets that are added to the project as WebP initially

I tested the page on an iPad Air, 1st. Generation, running Safari 12.5.7.

Hi norm, thanks, I wasn’t aware of that. So best practice would be save as JPG and let Blocs do the rest.

That iPad cannot display webP images. Funny enough, I also have one of those and it makes a great test device for webP/jpg/png images.

The correct procedure, is to enable webP generation and only add jpg or png images, as Norm points out above. If you add a webP image, the jpg (or png) fallback image and also the fallback code does not get generated.

Edit. Added png image types

Yes, that’s right - that’s why I use it for testing things …
Thanks!

Or PNGs. I use a lot of those because of transparency. As far as I can tell, that works flawlessly.
